What is BME Legal?

BME Legal is a group which was founded by Adeola Fadipe1 at the University of Hull in 2015. It now encompasses a committee made up of law students and pupil barristers, advisers and ambassadors who are all practising barristers and partner chambers who sponsor our events.

Why is BME Legal necessary?

The aim of the group is to increase diversity at the Bar. A recent Bar Standards Board report found:

“Of UK and EU students with a 2.1 in their undergraduate degree and a ‘very competent’ BPTC grade, and who enrolled in the course from 2013 to 2017, 44% of white students have attained pupillage, compared to 23% of BAME students.”

We firmly believe that increasing ethnic diversity at the Bar will bring many advantages including increased profitability, creativity, and a profession more representative of the clients it represents.
